5 Must-Visit Outdoor Places in Groningen
Explore Groningen and Drenthe on your bike with these five must-visit spots!
Whether you are spending your summer break in Groningen or just want to explore the city more, a cycling trip can be a fantastic activity to enjoy alone or with your friends. If you are tired of the usual spots like Stadspark or Noorderplantsoen, it is time to venture beyond your comfort zone. Discover all that Groningen and Drenthe provinces have to offer with these five must-visit outdoor places:
Reiderwolde Natural Reserve
If you are not easily spooked, Reiderwolde is the perfect destination to enjoy the flora and fauna of forests and swamps. Located on the east side of Blauwestad, Reiderwolde is the only natural burial place in Groningen. Challenging your fears is worth it though. This 200-hectare natural reserve often hosts theatre and musical performances. On one of the hills, you will find a 7.2-meter-high lookout tower, which allows you to enjoy the scenic views around. You can reach Reiderwolde by public transport or, if you are fit enough, you can cycle there in approximately two hours.
The Roegwold
Ever wanted to find the perfect boardwalk trail to impress your friends on Instagram? Then you should add The Roegwold to your to ‘do list’. After just a one-hour cycling trip, you can walk on The Knuppelpad and admire the blue moor frogs. Remember to bring your sturdiest boots, as this natural park is hardly paved except for the boardwalk! Similar to Reiderwolde, The Rogewold also hosts a festival: The Roeg Klassiek, a three-day classical music festival held in September.
De Onlanden
If bird watching is your passion, you will love De Onlanden. Situated just a thirty-minute bike ride from Groningen city centre, De Onlanden is a natural reserve rich in bird species. Climb the 127-step watchtower to spot your favourite bird species or admire the city from a distance. For water enthusiasts, a walk around the Leekstermeer is a must. Do not miss Lettelberterpetten, an area known for its picturesque bogs, and the Oude Mart, a rich forest that served as the primary firewood source for locals until 1964.
Paterswoldsemeer
The Paterswoldemeer is located just thirty minutes away by bike from Groningen and connects with the beloved Hornsemeer Lake. Created through peat extraction in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Paterswoldemeer is nowadays one of Groningen’s most popular recreational spots. It is an ideal destination for water sports like canoeing, swimming, and boating. You can also enjoy a leisurely picnic with friends or dine at one of the six restaurants surrounding the lake. For a nearby getaway from the city, consider camping or renting Scandinavian lodges at Scandinavisch Drop.
The Slochterbos
The Slochterbos is the estate which surrounds the historic Fraeylemaborg manor. The manor was built on the remains of a thirteenth-century house. Visitors can explore the manor, the estate and its adjacent exhibitions for a fee of €9 for adults and €3.50 for children (up to 12 years). Located an hour's bike ride from Groningen, Slochterbos is an English-style park, making it easy to navigate on food. However, be aware of local legends–it is said that the park is haunted by a mythical creature known as the Schreuder, or ‘The Shredder,’ who was reportedly seen walking in the forest with a knife in his mouth.
Ghost stories aside, exploring the surrounding areas of Groningen helps you engage with the nature and culture of this province. Whether you are drawn to natural reserves or prefer to relax next to tranquil waters, Groningen has something for all outdoor enjoyers. Plan your next cycling trip to discover these must-visit spots and immerse yourself in Groningen’s natural beauty and history.
