63 Million Euros to Be Given to Groningen Residents
Expanding Compensation for Groningen's Fracking-Related Damages and Relief Efforts.
Fracking and earthquakes have been a hot topic in and around Groningen for several years now. However, recently, there have been some changes.
The Instituut Mijnbouwschade Groningen (IMG) has extended its compensation system to account for more non-material damage. Residents whose homes were assessed as unsafe and required demolition, construction, or reinforcement are entitled to the highest compensation.
The parliamentary committee of inquiry concluded that the consequences of gas extraction in Groningen were disastrous over a year ago. In response, the IMG has re-analysed 70’000 applications for compensation over the past year and found that over 24’000 are eligible to receive an additional pay-out. All who are eligible for this payout have been contacted.
On the 27th of March 2024, the IMG will be accepting new applications for compensation for immaterial damages such as suffering, stress and sadness due to the consequences of gas extraction on the homes in Groningen. Those who have never received a decision on non-material damage are encouraged to apply for assessment under the updated compensation system.
