Ambulance Bike Team Back in Action Every Saturday in Groningen City Centre
Groningen deploys ambulance bike team every weekend to ensure faster emergency response in busy city centre.
Starting Saturday, April 5, the ambu-bike team from Ambulancezorg Groningen will once again be active in the city centre every Saturday night from 22:00 to 06:00. The team is deployed to quickly respond to incidents during busy nights out.
The bicycle ambulance team is made up of an ambulance nurse and an ambulance driver. Riding specially designed mountain bikes equipped with four bags containing complete Advanced Life Support (ALS) gear, the team can deliver the same level of care as a regular ambulance.
Thanks to their mobility, the bike team can move swiftly and quietly through the narrow streets of the city centre. This reduces unnecessary noise and disruption, while also easing pressure on the regular ambulance fleet. If additional care or transport is needed, the team can immediately call in a standard ambulance.
Part of the Police Public Order Team
The bike team works closely with the Public Order Team (OOT) of the Groningen police. This unique collaboration allows for immediate medical intervention while enabling police officers to concentrate fully on maintaining public order and safety. The bike team helps reduce the burden on standard ambulances, improving emergency care availability throughout the city.
Unique in the Netherlands
While ambulance bike teams are often used in other Dutch cities for large-scale events, Groningen is the only city where the ambu-bike is used structurally on a weekly basis. Over the years, the bike team has proven to be a valuable asset in creating a safer nightlife environment.
With quick access, close coordination with police, and a full medical kit at their disposal, the bicycle ambulance team continues to play an essential role in keeping the city centre safe and accessible for everyone during the weekend rush.
