Bicycle Flat at Groningen Central Station Will Be Removed in January
Temporary bicycle shed to open on south side, an underground facility is planned for 2026.
The bicycle parking area at Groningen Central Station is scheduled for demolition beginning January 17, 2025. This will facilitate work on the station's historic roof restoration. ProRail and contractors plan to utilize the space as a depot for the restored roofs throughout the construction period. Once removed, the bicycle parking area will not return.
To accommodate cyclists during this period, a temporary bicycle shed is being constructed on the south side of the station at Achterweg. The facility will provide approximately 1,000 spaces with racks and lighting. Cyclists travelling from the south of the city are encouraged to use this temporary shed, which connects to the station via the existing blue footbridge.
Train-Free Period and Transition to New Infrastructure
Between May 16 and July 5, 2025, there will be limited or no train services to and from Groningen Central Station. During this time, additional bicycle parking will be available at Groningen Europapark station. After this period, the new passenger tunnel from the south side of the station will open for use, providing improved access for travellers.
Long-Term Bicycle Parking Solution
The temporary bicycle shed will remain in place until 2026, when a new underground bicycle parking facility beneath the station is expected to open. This state-of-the-art facility will accommodate up to 16,500 bicycles, significantly enhancing the station's capacity for cyclists.
The redevelopment is part of the Groningen Spoorzone project, a collaboration between the Municipality of Groningen, the Province of Groningen, ProRail, NS, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. This project aims to improve public transport connections and enhance the station's overall appeal. For more details, visit groningenspoorzone.nl.
