Campaign #DareToHear Urges Better Support for Sexual Abuse Victims
#DurfTeHoren campaign urges support for sexual abuse victims – 24/7 help available at 0800-0188
The Groningen-Drenthe Sexual Violence Center and the Wij zijn M Foundation have launched the #DareToHear campaign to encourage people to listen to and understand the long-term effects of sexual abuse. The campaign highlights that many victims feel unheard or misunderstood, particularly when it comes to the lasting emotional and physical damage caused by abuse.
Understanding the Long-Term Impact
Many victims suffer from anxiety, sleep disturbances, depression, low self-esteem, and relationship difficulties, often for years after the abuse. Even after therapy, triggers and distress can remain. Despite this, society often expects victims to "move on" or "let it go," which can make recovery even harder.
The campaign shares real-life experiences from victims to help bystanders understand the importance of ongoing support. Victims often wait 16 years before speaking out, and when they do, they need people to listen without judgment.
Creating Awareness and Encouraging Action
The campaign is running on social media and aims to change the way people respond when a victim shares their story. It emphasizes that victims need understanding and a safe space to talk about their experiences, even years later.
Iva Bicanic, director of the Sexual Violence Center, stresses the importance of breaking misconceptions:
"Many believe that once a person has received therapy, they should be ‘healed.’ But in reality, survivors often deal with triggers for life. By increasing awareness, we can create a more supportive society."
Help is Available
For those in need of immediate support, the Sexual Assault Center provides 24/7 confidential assistance through a team of medical professionals, psychologists, police officers, and social workers. Victims are encouraged to reach out as soon as possible after an assault to access medical and psychological care, as well as legal support.
