Can You Survive an Earthquake? Try the New Martinishaker Escape Room
Inspired by real earthquakes from oil drilling in Groningen and the damages they have caused, the newest escape room of Goldberg Escape brings players a thrilling experience on your next group outing.
Goldberg Escape, located on the up-and-coming Suikerunie terrain in Groningen, has opened its newest escape room with a uniquely local theme: an earthquake has struck the city, and you and your team are trapped in a hollow space beneath the rubble. Your mission is to overcome the quake and call in the rescue team by pressing all the escape buttons, setting off the siren that signals your salvation.
This escape room, one of five at Goldberg Escape, is the brainchild of creator Martin Steeghs. "In Groningen, an earthquake theme is obvious," says Steeghs, who previously designed rooms where players had to escape from a submarine and a factory. The idea for this room, dubbed the Martinishaker, was born a few years ago but faced delays due to some technicians involved in its construction dealing with their own earthquake damage claims. "It caused a lot of misery for those people," Steeghs explains, noting that while he wasn't a victim himself, the situation deeply impacted him.
The Martinishaker escape room, available in both Dutch and English, has been in use since last week and has received positive feedback from participants. "People like it more than I expected, and it also brings the problem to attention," Steeghs says. He emphasises that the room is not meant to make light of the victims' experiences but rather to offer a critical perspective on the National Petroleum Company (NAM), the government, and the handling of damage settlements.
Goldberg Escape offers a variety of rooms, including two identical "Pig Newton" rooms where teams can compete against each other. The venue can accommodate groups of up to 30 people, making it an ideal location for company outings, family days, or just a fun challenge with friends. Bookings and payments are handled online via I-Deal, with a pin machine available on-site if needed.
For those looking to test their problem-solving skills and beat the clock, the Goldberg Escape team invites you to take up the challenge. But remember, punctuality is key—late arrivals could cost you precious playing time. Ready to see if you can escape? Book your experience here.
