Club OOST Will Close After Nine Years in Groningen
After nine years of music and community, Club OOST will close its doors on July 5 due to rising costs and financial pressure.
After almost ten years of shaping Groningen’s nightlife, Club OOST will close its doors for good on July 5, 2025. The team behind the club announced that rising costs—especially rent and building-related expenses—have made it impossible to continue.
OOST, located on Oosterstraat, has been a well-known spot for fans of electronic music, creative events, and inclusive nights out. For many, it was more than just a club—it was a safe and open space where people could dance, connect, and be themselves.
A Club With a History of Challenges
This isn’t the first time OOST has faced closing. In 2021, it shut down temporarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic and building issues. But in 2022, the club reopened thanks to a new concept that included bars, dining, and games, all sharing the same building.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to protect the club from rising expenses. "It’s terrible," said creative director Kos van Erp, calling OOST “a home base for many.” Still, there’s hope: “We would love to bring OOST back, maybe in a new place or form. But it won’t be easy.”
Saying Goodbye in Style
OOST will use the months of May and June to celebrate its final weeks with a special program. International artists from the past will return, and while many names will be kept secret until the night itself, resident DJs will be there to help create the final vibe.
The club is still accepting ideas for future locations or partnerships. Suggestions are welcome at kos@komoost.nl.
Meanwhile, Cilinder, the cocktail bar next door, will stay open. The club room that once held OOST’s parties will now be used for different events with new partners.
OOST has been an important part of Groningen’s culture and nightlife for years. It gave a platform to new sounds, artists, and ideas. Whether the club returns in a new form or not, its impact will be remembered by many.
