Discovering Groningen's Hiking Spots for Nature Lovers
Some of the best hiking trails and routes when you feel like ditching the bike for a bit.
Groningen may not be expansive in size but has a high population density. It is the most populated area in the northern Netherlands, with 257 inhabitants per square kilometre. Compared to cities like Amsterdam, it is not a significant amount, but for people who are not used to city lifestyle, it can feel quite overwhelming. The pace of a city can be exhausting, and what better way to recharge than going on a walk surrounded by nature? Here is a list of the best hiking routes around the city:
Groene Wissel
The Groene Wissel in Wedde is celebrated as one of the Netherlands' most scenic hikes, meandering through the tranquil Westerwoldse and Ruiten valleys, leading to Ter Wupping's view tower. This route offers a blend of natural beauty, historical sites like the witch-burning hill de Geselberg with its poignant monument, and ends at the historic fortress of Wedde. Despite its lack of facilities, the trail's highlights—lush river valleys, historical landmarks, and the serene environment—make it a must-visit for nature enthusiasts.
Pieterpad Segment
This 12.1-km trail near Pieterburen, Groningen, offers a mix of backpacking, camping, and hiking experiences. With a moderate difficulty level, it's a vibrant path attracting many, especially from March to October. Dogs can enjoy some off-lead freedom along sections of this scenic route connecting Pieterburen to Winsum via Eenrum. Although this trail is popular, it can present challenges such as minimal shade and unclear directions. However, the journey is rewarding with encounters with friendly dogs and serene nature spots. In some cases, a detour might be necessary due to construction.
Groningen City Walk
We know it was supposed to be about hikes outside the city, but this route is too nice to not mention it. The 8.2-km circular trail around Groningen blends history with natural beauty, offering sights of iconic architecture and vibrant city life. A moderate trek taking approximately 1 hour 42 min is ideal year-round for those looking to explore the city's historic centre, marvel at the Martini Tower and church, and enjoy the serene Prinsentuin's roses. Starting and ending at the Central Station, it's a journey through time, from medieval courtyards and canals to modern art and bustling cafes.
Friese Veen - Vosbergen
This 11.4-km trail near Haren, set in National Park Drentsche, offers a moderate hike with rich biodiversity and historical sites. It winds through swamp forests, bird-watching spots, and past estates and museums, revealing the area's musical heritage. Notably, the trail can be muddy, making drier conditions preferable for a visit. Despite its popularity among nature enthusiasts, its challenging terrains caution against rainy-day hikes.
Lauwersoog
Explore the serene 7.2-km trail around Lauwersoog, perfect for birding, hiking, and running. This easy route, set in the breathtaking National Park Lauwersmeer, offers diverse landscapes from woods to coastal paths. Note, parts of the trail, like the dyke stretch along the Wadden Sea, may be closed for construction, impacting the circular route's completion. Additionally, while pets are welcome, the bridge crossing may pose challenges for smaller or less sure-footed dogs. Enjoy the natural beauty and remember to check for route updates.
