Fire at Metal Recycling Company Causes Thick Smoke and Stench Over Groningen
Residents advised to be cautious when going outside today as air quality may still be affected.
A fire broke out at a metal recycling company on Gdanskweg in Groningen, releasing thick clouds of smoke that drifted over the city. The fire, which started in barrels of scrap metal, caused significant smoke and a foul odour, prompting the fire department to issue a warning.
An NL Alert was sent, advising residents to close doors and windows if they were affected by the smell. Reports of the stench came in from various parts of the city, including areas near UMCG and the southern neighbourhoods. Some people were seen cycling with scarves and tissues over their mouths to block out the smell.
The fire department brought in large fire engines and used sorting grabs to pull apart the pile of shredded iron dust, which was contributing to the smoke. Though the smoke was thick, the fire department soon began extinguishing the blaze, and the smoke started to thin out.
As of today, the fire on Gdanskweg 45 is under control, and the public warning notice has been lifted. Residents can now open doors and windows and switch on ventilation systems. However, if you plan to go outside today, it’s still advisable to stay cautious, especially if there are lingering smells or smoke in certain areas.
