Groningen Backs Local Food — More Regional Produce in Hospitals, Schools and Shops
A new agreement brings fresh, local food closer to home—while helping farmers earn more.
Fresh, local, and fair food is becoming more accessible across Groningen. Thirty organisations—from farmers and hospitals to schools and supermarkets—have signed a new agreement to support regional food. Their goal: make it easier for people in Groningen to eat healthy, local food while also strengthening the local economy.
The initiative, called Healthy Food from the Environment, is backed by the municipality and province of Groningen, and follows over a year of preparation with the Fascinating program.
Why it matters
Alderman Kirsten de Wrede, who focuses on agriculture and food innovation, explains: “We want everyone in Groningen to have access to good, fresh food—especially in neighbourhoods where that’s not always easy. At the same time, this supports farmers by giving them a more stable income. That allows them to invest in better land, new techniques, and sustainable production.”
Big buyers get on board
The agreement encourages large local organisations to buy directly from regional producers. These include the UMCG and Martini Hospital, the University of Groningen (RUG), and care organisation Espria. With more demand from these big buyers, farmers and food producers get a more reliable and fair income.
A stronger local economy
The idea is simple: when more money stays in the region, it helps local businesses grow and creates jobs. De Wrede adds, “Short food chains are a great way to make our food system healthier and more secure. They fit perfectly with the sustainability goals of our city and province.”
What’s next?
The first focus is on large organisations like schools, hospitals, and government offices. Their consistent purchases help build a strong foundation for a better food system. Over time, the goal is to expand access to more people and businesses.
Want to join?
Organisations in Groningen and the Northern Netherlands that want to support this movement can join as a full partner or supporter.
