Groningen Hit by Both Stabbing and Shooting Incidents in One Day
Two separate violent incidents, one stabbing and one shooting, resulted in major police operations in Groningen on Thursday evening.
Groningen experienced an unusually violent evening on Thursday, August 14, 2025, with two separate incidents: a stabbing at the city beach and a shooting near Papiermolen swimming pool, resulting in heightened police activity and concern across the city.
Stabbing at the City Beach
At around 9:30 PM, police were called to the city beach on Bloemsingel, where a person had been stabbed. Emergency services arrived quickly and provided assistance. The victim was transported to the hospital, and a suspect has been arrested and is now in custody as authorities investigate the motive and circumstances surrounding the stabbing.
Shooting Evacuation at De Papiermolen Pool
Earlier that evening, at approximately 6:25 PM, a shooting incident occurred outside the De Papiermolen swimming pool on Papiermolenlaan. Multiple shots were reportedly fired while several hundred people were inside the pool. Although no one was injured, the pool was immediately evacuated.
Authorities launched an on-site investigation, interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage. The police are actively seeking a critical witness, a young man wearing a white shirt and light blue trousers who reportedly filmed the incident, along with any others possessing video or information.
A Rare Single-Day Surge in Violent Incidents
According to regional reports, it’s highly unusual for two distinct violent events to occur in one evening in Groningen. Both the stabbing and the shooting are under active investigation, with no connection between them yet established.
