Groningen Plans to Renew & Modernise 6 Neighbourhoods
Revitalising Groningen’s neighbourhoods — new housing, green spaces, and community support in 2025-2026
The Municipality of Groningen has unveiled its 'Neighborhood Renewal in Groningen Style 2025-2026' plans, focusing on improving the quality of life in seven districts: Selwerd, De Hoogte, Indische Buurt, Beijum, Lewenborg, De Wijert, and the newly added Vinkhuizen.
This renewal goes beyond just upgrading homes—it aims to create safer, greener, and more connected communities by tackling poverty, improving public spaces, supporting youth and elderly residents, and making neighborhoods healthier and more sustainable.
What’s Been Achieved and What’s Next?
Beijum – Ongoing projects like Heerdenaanpak and Aanpak Beijumerweg have helped modernise the area, while social programs such as Beijum in Bedrijf and the Buurtacademie are boosting local employment and education opportunities.
Lewenborg – Improvements to the shopping square, new recreational areas, and a youth meeting spot have led to a noticeable drop in youth-related disturbances.
De Wijert – By autumn 2024, 85 new social housing units will be completed. A health coach now helps residents connect with the right healthcare services.
De Hoogte – The new Johan de Wittpark has transformed part of the neighborhood into a welcoming green space, and the Asingastraat neighborhood hub now offers a space for professionals to meet and support local residents.
Selwerd – The area has gained a new heating network, greener streets, and better walking and play areas. Community projects like Volkshortus help strengthen social ties among residents.
Investing in the Future
To bring these plans to life, the municipality has set aside €5.1 million per year, along with extra funding from the national government and Nij Begun subsidies. The goal is to modernise these neighborhoods without displacing current residents. The municipality is working with housing associations to renovate homes while ensuring that social housing remains available.
Working Together for a Better Groningen
Neighborhood renewal is a team effort—residents, local businesses, housing corporations, schools, and social organisations are all involved in shaping the future of these areas. The shared goal? Stronger, healthier, and more connected neighborhoods where everyone has opportunities to thrive.
