Groningen Unites to Support Food Bank’s Christmas Campaign
Join the effort to collect food and care items for those in need this holiday season at local supermarkets or the Food Bank warehouse.
The Groningen Food Bank is gearing up for its annual Christmas campaign, aiming to replenish its stock of non-perishable food and care products to support those in need during the winter months. The drive will take place next week across participating supermarkets in the municipality, inviting everyone to contribute and make a difference.
A Simple Way to Help
From December 11 to 13, volunteers will be stationed at 55 supermarkets across Groningen during the afternoon hours (12:00–18:00). Shoppers will be provided with a list of requested items—non-perishable foods and hygiene products—and encouraged to buy an extra item or two to donate after checkout.
“Every little bit helps,” says Koos van Huis, campaign coordinator for the Groningen Food Bank. “The Christmas spirit makes people more willing to give, and we hope to see that generosity shine through this year.”
Filling the Shelves and Hearts
The goal is to collect at least 2,000 crates of supplies. Once gathered, these items will be sorted by volunteers and distributed to the Food Bank’s customers. Primary schools are also joining the effort, with children contributing items from home. “Kids are incredibly moved by this cause,” adds Van Huis. “It’s heartwarming to see their enthusiasm.”
For those unable to shop during the campaign, donations can also be dropped off directly at the Food Bank’s warehouse on Ulgersmaweg 57 from 08:45 to 13:00, Monday through Saturday. Businesses or individuals with large quantities of items can arrange for pickup by calling the Food Bank during office hours.
The Food Bank’s chair, Elly Pastoor, emphasises the importance of reaching those in need. “If you’re struggling to afford daily groceries or healthy meals, don’t hesitate to reach out. Everyone who visits us will receive immediate help, no questions asked.”
A Collective Effort
The campaign is powered by a dedicated team of volunteers, including students and community members, who ensure the initiative runs smoothly. Despite the harsh autumn weather, the Food Bank remains optimistic about the turnout.
The full schedule of participating supermarkets is available on the Groningen Food Bank’s website. Whether by donating at a supermarket, dropping off items at the warehouse, or organizing a larger contribution, every effort counts.
Spreading Joy This Holiday Season
As Groningen comes together for this campaign, the message is clear: no one should go without during the holidays. The Food Bank invites everyone to lend a hand and share the holiday spirit. “Together, we can make a real difference,” says Pastoor.
