How Accessible Is Your Neighborhood?
Your Voice Can Help Make the Province of Groningen’s Neighborhoods More Accessible.
Ever tried a ten-minute walk to the supermarket only to be stopped by a cracked pavement or a busy crossing with no zebra stripes? Everything looks close on maps, but those few steps can feel like miles in real life. We get it: sometimes maps and reality don't match.
As part of the AccessCity4All project, researchers from the University of Groningen are looking beyond the usual maps and distance calculations. They want your real, everyday stories to understand how accessible our neighborhoods truly are. Accessibility isn’t just about how close your school, café, or grocery store is. It's about whether your streets are safe and easy to navigate, or if getting around feels more like a daily hassle than a simple trip.
Early conversations with residents have already revealed eye-opening experiences: from the social value of a local shop closing down and the struggle of navigating confusing public transport, to the simple joy of living in a quiet area, even if it means fewer nearby services. These are the details planners often miss, and that's why your voice matters.
The AccessCity4All team has created an interactive, easy-to-use map-based questionnaire that lets you pinpoint exact locations in your daily life, from your home to your work, the local park, or your favourite café, and share your experiences. Your stories can help policy decisions in the province of Groningen, helping planners understand what really matters to residents like you. It’s quick, anonymous, and genuinely impactful. Your everyday journeys matter: let’s put them on the map!
