How to Make Friends in Groningen if You’re Not a Student
And if you are a student, don't worry, you'll still find this list helpful.
Making new friends is hard, even as a student. When you no longer have the everyday obligations of school where you see the same people every day and have a chance to become closer over time, or don’t get along with your colleagues too well, things can get lonely. So, what options are out there?
1. Dating Apps, Just for Friends
It’s 2024 and there are apps for literally everything, including finding friends. While you can make friends on the good ol’ dating apps such as Bumble, Tinder and OKCupid if you select the “looking for friends” option, some other apps you can try include Meetup, Hey! VINA, and Amigos.
2. Online Communities
Similar to the first option, there are many groups and communities where people ask questions, chat and meet new people. Try Reddit’s r/Groningen to check for news and what events people might be visiting. Facebook has quite a few groups, such as Expats in Groningen, New in Groningen and Groningen’s Women's Group. You can also ask around these sites to see if there are any active WhatsApp group chats that match your interests. They are always changing and new ones pop up, so it’s worth googling what might be out there.
3. Sports Clubs
There is a multitude of sports clubs for students and adults. Join a fitness class, a dance class, a volleyball or tennis club. Consistently participating in group hobbies, such as sports, can foster connections among individuals within the group. As a bonus, a lot of these clubs also host borrels, which are basically hangouts at bars, which will help you meet people in a more relaxed atmosphere (quite literally - no running allowed in bars!)
4. Hikes, Book Clubs and DnD
Going off hobby activities, there is (surprisingly) plenty to offer in terms of nature walk groups, board game nights, wine clubs and more. What better way to start conversations than bonding over a favourite activity? Check your local cafes, gyms, forums, and Instagram pages as they might post announcements calling people for meetups and events. Here and Now in Groningen is a good starting point to browse what is out there.
5. Events Where You Can Actually Talk to People
Think networking. Tried and tested by yours truly, networking events allow you to meet inspiring and talented individuals for work contacts, but who says stop there? Similar activities can include volunteering - for charity or organising festivals, your pick. Even locally organised conferences, seminars, skill workshops etc. can be a fun way of learning something new and meeting new people.
Honourable mention goes to going out alone to cafes and bars and approaching people, but not everyone is at that level. Make sure to keep things civil, lighthearted and fun — and good luck!
