Huge Traffic Disruption in Following Days
Operation Ring Zuid will start on the 23rd of March and will continue until the 2nd of September. During that time the authorities advice to limit the usage of cars. It is estimated that daily traffic needs to be decreased by around 20% (80,000 vehicles!) to keep a smooth flow and avoid congestion.
Groningen, compared to other Dutch cities is not as vast. In situations such as this, it has some benefits. There are other means of transportation available in a city, and now it’s a great opportunity to try them. Here is a list of the most popular options:
1. Bike
For a person who lives in Groningen, it sounds obvious. The whole city is designed in a way, to make bikes the most comfortable and efficient way of commuting. Additionally, it’s free! (provided you own one, of course)
2. Felyx/Check
If you don’t have much experience with biking, renting a scooter can be a decent alternative. It provides all the bicycle benefits without the physical exertion and a quicker ride. However, apps like Felyx and check charge by the minute and can get pretty pricey in the long term.
3. Public Transportation
Busses and trains work really well in Groningen, usually arriving on time. Sometimes, it’s a cheaper and faster option than renting a scooter. Its only issue is that it can get crowded in rush hours, which can have a negative impact on your comfort.
4. Work From Home
I know it is not possible for everyone, but the recent pandemic proved that some professions can handle it well. You can always ask your employer if such an option is possible.
