Instagram Reel Shocks Groningen as Daredevil Climbs the Martini Tower
An anonymous urban climber has conquered the Martini Tower and claims that he is not afraid.
The world of Youtube and short-form content such as Instagram Reels and Tiktok has seen an influx of Daredevil videos: dangerous parkour, extreme mountain biking, jumping between skyscrapers… you name it, it probably exists.
One such daredevil appeared last night, with a new account on Instagram with a single reel popped up - showing a rather professional-looking montage of a man climbing the Martini Tower at sunset with no safety precautions.
The Martini Tower is the tallest church steeple in Groningen at 97 metres, where regular people seem reluctant to climb the stairs to reach the top, much less climb the outside of the building. It goes without saying that what the man has done is illegal and extremely dangerous, so do not try this yourself.
Though to give credit where credit is due - the video is awesome. We suspect the individual has a cinematography team with drones to capture the climb, with soft orange rays of the sun casting a warm light on the cityscape. The video comes from a profile named ghost.affect, where this single video is uploaded, with quite a daring quote underneath:
“**** the world and grind your dreams. Any Questions you have will not be answered.”
The video raises numerous questions, prompting Dagblad van het Noorden to contact the video's creator, who kept his face and body covered for anonymity. The contact was made via Instagram chat, in English. The urban climber, who does not come from Groningen, prefers to keep his exact location private.
When asked about his motivations, he revealed that he has been climbing cathedrals, skyscrapers, and other tall structures across Europe for over ten years. He chose the Martini Tower because of its interesting shape and the fact that he hasn't seen anyone else climb it yet.
Dagblad van het Noorden and Sikkom suspect that this video may have been created using Artificial intelligence, as the technologies today allow the fabrication of deep fakes and rather realistic video content.
Who is this man and will he continue climbing the structures of Groningen, or is he a one-hit wonder?
