Major Investments to Bridge the Economic Gap with the Rest of the Netherlands
A 30-year plan backed by €3 billion aims to strengthen innovation, attract businesses, and improve regional prosperity.
Groningen and North Drenthe will receive €3 billion over the next 30 years to boost the economy and improve living conditions. The plan, known as Nij Begun, aims to bring the region's economy up to the national level. It includes annual funding of €100 million, plus an additional €250 million in start-up funds.
This money comes as compensation for the damage caused by gas extraction in Groningen, often referred to as a "debt of honor." The funds will be used to create jobs, support businesses, improve education, and attract more tourists.
Main Goals of Nij Begun
The economic plan has five key goals:
Build a stronger economy with sustainable industries and better infrastructure.
Support businesses and entrepreneurship to create more jobs.
Invest in education and training to keep talent in the region.
Use local knowledge to develop new innovations.
Boost Groningen’s image as a place for business, tourism, and research.
Key Investments
The money will be invested in important industries like sustainable energy, healthcare technology, agriculture, and shipbuilding. More funds will also go toward making factories greener and attracting more tourists.
Some of the biggest projects include:
€150 million for educational campuses – helping students gain real-world work experience and connect with local businesses.
€180 million for regional shopping centers – improving areas like Winschoten, Veendam, and Stadskanaal.
€200 million for tourism – building major attractions, better hotels, and holiday parks to bring 1.5 million extra visitors to Groningen each year.
Be Careful with the Money
Quartermaster Jakob Klompien, who leads the project, warned that the money should not be wasted. He emphasised that it should go toward real improvements, not bureaucracy or budget gaps. He also stressed the need for collaboration between businesses, schools, and governments to make the best use of the funds.
“This is a debt of honor, and we have an obligation to use it wisely to secure a prosperous future for Groningen,” Klompien stated.
The ultimate goal of Nij Begun is to create a stronger, healthier, and more prosperous region. By investing in education, industry, and tourism, Groningen can grow its economy, improve living standards, and become a leader in sustainability and innovation.
