Misha Pchenitchnikov Becomes Groningen's New Night Mayor
Misha Pchenitchnikov, a 27-year-old with extensive experience in Groningen nightlife, has been elected as the city’s new night mayor. Chosen by a jury and audience during an election night at EM2, he aims to prioritize safety, diversity, and a more connected nightlife.
Misha Pchenitchnikov succeeds Merlijn Poolman, who held the position for six years, partly extended due to the pandemic. Known for his deep ties to the Groningen nightlife scene, Pchenitchnikov began his journey at 15, organizing events and working on safety initiatives through the Night Council and other roles.
During his pitch, Pchenitchnikov emphasised his vision for a vibrant, inclusive nightlife and the importance of uniting the city's nightlife stakeholders, from event organisers to emergency services. "Many good things are happening in Groningen's nightlife, but they often exist in silos. I aim to connect these islands to create a more cohesive experience," he stated.
The position of night mayor involves acting as a bridge between the municipality, nightlife venues, artists, and other key players to ensure a safer and more vibrant nightlife. Though the term typically lasts two years, Pchenitchnikov noted it could extend depending on circumstances.
“I’m excited to get started and make a positive impact on Groningen’s nightlife,” Pchenitchnikov shared. His key priorities include enhancing safety and promoting diversity while supporting initiatives that benefit the city’s night culture.
