(More) Places to Study in Groningen
The essays are not going to write themselves — the least you can do for yourself is find a convenient and relaxing study spot.
We’ve all been there. Perhaps you have loud neighbours or flatmates that will not let you concentrate at home. Or the temptation to slack off is too great, leaving you with more work at the end of the day as you did no studying, no cleaning and instead sat on your phone all day.
Also, we’re not here to state the obvious - you already know of Forum, the university-affiliated libraries, and the popular cafes in the city centre. Google is a handy tool, and we encourage you to use it.
Instead, we would like to introduce some hidden gems, or places you may not have considered before to work or study in Groningen.
Speaking of Forum, did you know it has quite a few library branches?
Vinkhuizen, De Wijert, Selwerd and more, there might be a branch close to where you live (and it is probably less crowded anyway).
Do you want some coffee or tea with your studies? De Uurwerker’s slogan is literally work, coffee, food, beer. Write that essay with some brunch in the afternoon and unwind with a beer in the evening, the cosy cafe/bar/restaurant has you covered.
You might think The Social Hub is only for the residents staying in their rooms, but they have an open cafe on the ground floor with free and quiet desk spaces. If you are tactical enough, you can try to strike up a conversation with some young professionals working there for your networking contacts. But be respectful, it goes without saying.
Now, Ikea is a dangerous place to include, but we’re doing it anyway. Their food court has many seating spaces for studying and dining, just make sure you control your spending urges while you get there. Or, you know, treat yourself anyway.
If all else fails, try local cafes or even parks near your house, or switch it up every so often. Studying and working can get stale, so spice it up however you can. Whether you wish to sample a new beverage every now and then, or sneak your laptop into places you might get kicked out of — if it helps you concentrate, happy studying!
