New Traditions for KEI Week—Less Alcohol, More Inclusion
Europe’s largest student introduction week returns with a focus on alcohol awareness, sustainability, and a warm welcome for vocational students.
When KEI Week kicks off in Groningen on August 11th, over 5,000 new students will be welcomed to the city through a packed five-day program of parties, performances, and introductions to student life. But this year, fun comes with a fresh dose of awareness: organisers are placing a strong emphasis on conscious alcohol consumption, sustainability, and the inclusion of vocational (MBO) students.
A Cultural Staple, Reimagined
Now in its 57th edition, KEI Week is not just the oldest student introduction week in the Netherlands—it’s also the largest in Europe. “We’ve become a part of Groningen’s cultural heritage,” says KEI chairman Niels van der Schaft. “But we want to show that a great time doesn’t have to come at the cost of awareness or exclusion.”
That philosophy is reflected in this year’s theme. Rather than encouraging binge drinking, organisers are promoting a culture where alcohol is optional, not expected. Conscious alternatives will be available at events, and partnerships with local sustainability group GROENN will ensure better waste separation, the use of reusable cups, and energy-conscious planning.
Welcoming All Students
For the first time, vocational students will have a dedicated space in the program with the launch of the MBO Welcome event. The number of MBO participants has grown rapidly in recent years thanks to collaborations with local institutions, but organisers say the experience needed a tailored approach.
“MBO students can’t always participate in the same way as older students, especially when it comes to alcohol,” explains Van der Schaft. “We want to make sure they feel just as welcome, with information and activities that reflect their reality.”
The MBO Welcome will provide tips and tools tailored to vocational students, reinforcing KEI Week’s aim to include all new students in Groningen’s student community.
A Finale to Remember
In addition to long-running favourites like the city tour and sports showcases, 2025 introduces a potential record-breaker: the largest pub quiz ever held in Europe. Taking place on the Grote Markt, the quiz will cover topics like sustainability, student well-being, and financial management. The goal is to mix fun with useful information for incoming students.
KEI Week will conclude on August 15th with the brand-new Fiesta de Casa at the Suikerterrein—a large graduation-style festival featuring top national artists and local acts. Thousands of students are expected to attend what organisers hope will be a fun, inclusive, and sustainable close to the week.
