No Trains to Europapark During Archaeological Research and Construction Work
Archaeological research and major construction at Groningen station from 3 to 11 August.
From August 3 to 11, significant work will take place at Groningen station, including archaeological research and major construction on the tracks and platforms. This work aligns with a planned nine-day period when no trains will run between Groningen Central Station and Groningen Europapark station.
Archaeological Research
Contractor Strukton Civiel will carry out archaeological research at the site of the existing bus buffer, where the entrance to a future bus underpass will be built. The research involves making six drillings to a maximum depth of approximately 4.5 metres, spread across the site to create a comprehensive picture of the area. The aim is to determine whether there are any archaeological findings in the subsurface, which will inform any necessary measures before construction of the bus underpass begins. The work will be done using low-noise equipment to minimise disruption to the surrounding area.
Construction and Demolition Work
During the same period, extensive work will be carried out on the tracks and platforms around the station. This includes:
- The removal of the red tower crane.
- Demolition of the auxiliary bridge on the platform square.
- Preparing platforms 1 and 3 for the foundations of new platform roofs.
- Partial demolition of the existing concrete wall at track 7.
- Drilling anchors for the track-bearing part of the bus underpass.
Additionally, Aanpak Ring Zuid will remove the remains of the viaduct on the southern ring road at Verlengde Lodewijkstraat.
Transport Adjustments
Due to these activities, there will be no train service between Groningen Central Station and Groningen Europapark station. Instead, the city will deploy buses to run between these stations. NS trains to Zwolle and Arriva trains to Veendam and Bad Nieuweschans will not be able to use the track between the two stations during this period. Travellers are advised to cycle to Groningen Europapark station to start their train journeys. The number of bicycle parking spaces at Groningen Europapark station has been expanded, and the municipality will monitor and add more parking spaces as needed. Travellers should plan for an additional fifteen minutes of travel time.
