Over 2,300 Affordable Homes Planned for Groningen-Noord with National Support
Major funding secured to increase housing, public spaces, and community life in Groningen-Noord as part of a national renewal program.
National Investment in Local Housing
As part of the National Programme for Liveability and Safety (NPLV), Groningen-Noord will receive between €22.5 and €27 million in subsidy from the Ministry of Housing and Spatial Planning. This funding will speed up housing development, playgrounds, and community infrastructure in the area.
Alderman Rik van Niejenhuis, representing the Groningen-Noord Social Coalition, emphasised the dual purpose of the project: “We are not just signing for faster home construction, but also for creating social spaces where neighbours can connect. Liveability and safety go hand in hand.”
A Broader National Effort
The subsidy forms part of a larger national agreement signed by Minister Mona Keijzer at the Housing Summit on June 24. Across 19 NPLV regions, approximately 50,000 homes will be constructed or improved between 2025 and 2029, with €600 million allocated—of which €180 million is allocated for public space and facilities.
According to Minister Keijzer, districts like Groningen-Noord face added challenges: “These are often densely populated areas with ageing housing and public spaces in need of renewal. This program ensures more and better affordable homes while boosting the local environment.”
More Than Just Housing
Alongside housing, the project also focuses on making neighbourhoods more livable and inclusive, with investments in green spaces, play areas, and gathering spots. The goal is to build a resilient community where residents not only have access to housing, but also to safe and welcoming public areas.
Long-Term Community Benefits
The new homes are expected to benefit a wide range of residents, particularly those in need of affordable rental options. The combination of social, spatial, and economic improvements is intended to help revitalize Groningen-Noord and make it a more attractive place to live for years to come.
