Rising Home Burglaries in Groningen Amid Summer Holidays
A surge in break-ins urges residents to take extra precautions as burglars target homes during the peak holiday season.
In recent months, home burglaries in Groningen have been on the rise, especially during the summer holiday period when many residents are away. In June 2024, burglars struck 24 times across the city, with the city centre being the most targeted area, experiencing seven incidents. The situation likely worsened in July and August, as the holiday season is known to be a peak time for burglaries, with a nationwide increase of 23% last year according to insurer Interpolis.
In the past seven days alone, nine burglaries or attempted burglaries were reported in the municipality of Groningen, with Haren and Groningen being the main areas affected. Seven of these were actual burglaries, and two were attempted break-ins. So far, August has seen 11 such incidents, adding to a total of 190 burglaries or attempted burglaries in Groningen this year, with 22 of these being unsuccessful attempts.
To help prevent such incidents, the police recommend several measures, including:
Installing automatic lights.
Keeping valuables out of sight.
Pruning shrubs around your home for better visibility.
Securing ladders and containers that could aid burglars in breaking in.
With these precautions, you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim of home burglary during this vulnerable season.
