RUG Security Denies Students Due to Face Mask and Palestinian Flag, University Admits Mistake
University acknowledges error in heightened security measures, updated guidelines for future incidents.
Recently, security at the University of Groningen (RUG) wrongly denied students entry to university buildings, thinking they were pro-Palestinian demonstrators. According to several reports, one student was turned away for carrying a Palestinian bag, and another for wearing a medical face mask, causing them to miss their lectures.
The university admitted that security made a mistake, as they aren't allowed to stop students for these reasons. There are no rules banning Palestinian flags or medical face masks. RUG has now given security new guidelines to prevent this from happening again.
The university has increased security since several pro-Palestinian protests last year, including a protest camp and a disrupted march. Extra security and cameras have been set up around university buildings in response.
