“Senseless Violence” in City Centre Flared up This Weekend
Two violent incidents in Groningen: assault and shooting in city centre over the weekend.
Groningen experienced two violent incidents over the weekend, with an assault on Friday night followed by a shooting in the early hours of Sunday morning.
In the first incident, a serious assault took place on Poelestraat around 5:45 a.m. on Saturday. Two suspects, aged 26 and 34, attacked a victim, reportedly punching them and using a taser. The victim was then kicked in the head after falling to the ground. Police quickly arrested the suspects, who remain in custody as the investigation continues. The victim's condition is currently unknown. This assault follows a string of similar violent incidents in the city, including multiple attacks in August and September, where victims were knocked out and severely beaten.
The second incident occurred just a day later in Peperstraat, where a shooting took place at a catering establishment around 5:50 a.m. on Sunday. A 37-year-old man was found injured outside the building and was later arrested as one of the suspects. A firearm was discovered nearby, though it remains unclear if it was used in the shooting. Another suspect, a 49-year-old man, was also arrested. Both individuals are in custody and will be questioned as the investigation continues.
Police are still investigating both incidents, which have raised concerns about the recent spike in violent crimes in Groningen’s city centre.
