Suspected Shooting Near Martini Hospital Triggered Large-Scale Police Response
SWAT Team Arrests Suspect Following Reports of Gunfire at Damsport; Paterswoldseweg Reopened After Brief Closure.
On Saturday morning, reports of a possible shooting incident at Damsport in Groningen, near the Martini Hospital, led to a large-scale police response. Around 9:30 a.m., police received information suggesting shots had been fired in the area. Although it remains unconfirmed whether shots were actually fired, multiple bystanders reported hearing gunfire, with some claiming to have heard multiple shots.
In response, police units, including the Special Intervention Service (DSI) and a SWAT team, arrived to secure the area. The police swiftly cordoned off the surrounding areas for investigation, including Paterswoldseweg at the height of Laan Corpus den Hoorn, which was closed to traffic temporarily.
Around 11:00 a.m., the SWAT team entered an apartment complex in the area and arrested one individual. This suspect was taken to a care institution with the assistance of a psycholance—a specially equipped vehicle designed to transport individuals experiencing mental health crises.
The Paterswoldseweg has since been reopened to traffic, and the police investigation into the incident continues. So far, no injuries have been reported.
