Testing our Teamwork at Escape Hunt Groningen
Challenging puzzles, adrenaline-fueled teamwork, and unforgettable moments—Escape Hunt Groningen offers the ultimate escape room experience.
If you're looking for an experience that challenges your mind, brings friends or colleagues closer, and lets you immerse yourself in a thrilling adventure, Escape Hunt in Groningen is the place to go. We recently visited in two small groups, ready to test our critical thinking in two of their legendary escape rooms. With both seasoned escape room enthusiasts and first-timers in our group, we were excited to dive in and experience what Escape Hunt had to offer—spoiler: we didn’t quite escape in time, but more on that later.
Escape Hunt, which first opened in 2014, offers three different room themes to cater to a variety of tastes and group sizes. Whether you're into historical mysteries, local legends, or just want to dive into an exciting narrative, there’s something for everyone. Escape Hunt is known for its highly immersive setups, each room designed to pull you into its world with detailed interiors and storylines that hit close to home—quite literally in some cases, with local Groningen-inspired themes.
A Pirate's Treasure Awaits, and the Lost Trophy
My group chose "Rock’s Pirate Treasure," a room centred on the real-life Groningen-born pirate, Rock. We will not spoil the details, but the room was well decorated with both clues and distractions to really make us think. It felt pretty immersive, but we had no time to soak in the aesthetics as we scrambled to search around the room for anything and everything.
The objective was pretty simple, find the key (not a traditional key, you’ll have to visit if you want to find out what it is) and leave the room before the hour runs out. Achieving it, however, took some brain power from our combined 4 brain cells. When we felt too lost, we had to suck up our pride to ring the room master for a hint and dock one minute of our playing time. Nevertheless, sacrifices had to be made. The pressure was weighing heavily on us as the clock was ticking, and it felt like we were falling way behind. At the end with only 2 minutes remaining, our team went into zen mode. Something clicked as my teammate shouted out her idea, and we managed to open up a chest, then another one, and had to struggle with the last key to reach our ticket to escape.
“WE GOT IT!” screamed another teammate, and he passed the key to our friend who ran to insert the key and open the door… with 5 seconds over the time limit. A shame, but we made it out, so it's still a small win in my books.
Our other group who tackled the FC Groningen-themed room (local football team), failed miserably. They were not even close to done (but to give them some credit, it was the hardest challenge in the establishment with a 15% passing rate. We told them we won (and had a moment of gloating) as we dived into discussions about the creative traps and hints we solved in our room while the other team did the same. Teammates, if you’re reading this, we lied. Great game though.
The Perfect Team-Building Experience
If you're looking for a team-building activity, Escape Hunt is ideal. Whether it's for business colleagues, students, or even family gatherings, the competitive element of trying to escape while racing against another team adds a layer of excitement. The rooms are designed to accommodate different group sizes, even allowing up to 10 people to play against each other in parallel rooms—a unique feature that sets Escape Hunt apart.
One of our teammates, Wiktor, who was sceptical at first, found the challenge surprisingly fun. "I thought it would be boring or childish, but it was super fun! That (hint censored for mystique) puzzle was insane—we almost made it."
Arian, who tackled the FC-themed room, shared his experience: "We didn’t solve a single thing without a hint, but it was still really fun! It was a good test of our team dynamics and problem-solving under pressure." He also noted how the hints were helpful without giving too much away, allowing them to still feel like they had a fighting chance.
Custom-Made for Groups
Escape Hunt prides itself on catering to a wide audience, from small groups of two to larger groups of 30. They offer not just escape rooms but also packages for businesses, including options for post-game drinks or even custom events with presentations. It’s a perfect mix of fun, challenge, and bonding.
The staff were friendly and clearly passionate about creating a great experience for visitors. "It’s really nice to see how different groups approach the puzzles," said one of the game masters. "Some are super calm and methodical, while others—like bachelor parties or kids—are total chaos, but it's all part of the fun."
A Challenge Worth the Time
While we didn’t manage to escape in time, the experience was exhilarating and something we’ll definitely try again. Escape Hunt isn’t just an activity—it’s an immersive adventure that tests your wits, builds teamwork, and, above all, offers loads of fun. if you’re very confident with your skills, try a room with only one other person. More hands on board means you can analyse the clues faster and without the added help it can really feel like it's you against the world. Book a room for the weekend to enjoy indoor entertainment during the upcoming cold and rainy days.
