The Government Will Build a New Green Neighbourhood in Groningen
De Held III, a modern family neighbourhood, will feature green spaces and a diverse range of affordable homes – construction of the first of 1,850 homes is slated for 2027.
De Held III will be a modern family neighbourhood, with a green environment and various types of affordable homes. The municipality is planning to build 1,850 homes starting in 2027, which will help address the urgent need for housing in Groningen.
On February 29, 2024, the municipality of Groningen and the Groninger Projecten CV (GPCV) signed an outline agreement.
“This is an important step for the development of the new residential area on the northwestern edge of the city,” the municipality said.
The area between Gravenburg and De Held will be developed following the agreement after years of discussion. The plan area consists of three parts: north, centre and south. De Held III will seamlessly integrate into Groningen's urban fabric and connect existing neighbourhoods.
Important to the development of De Held III is a commitment to building in harmony with nature and ecology, nodding to the area's historical roots as a mound landscape. The design features elevated residential clusters surrounded by greenery, reflecting a holistic approach to sustainable urban development.
1,850 homes
The housing program at De Held III reflects a diverse mix of options and will offer 30% social housing, 20% affordable housing, and 50% private sector residences. Moreover, the central area will feature a vibrant facilities centre, enhancing residents' quality of life and encouraging community engagement.
The plan also includes a new neighbourhood park between the existing school near Gravenburg and a new sports park on the northeast side of the plan area, between Reitdiepsplein and the allotments. A main access route, a public transport connection and a network of cycle and pedestrian paths will make the area accessible.
With construction set to begin in 2027, De Held III is positioned to revolutionize Groningen's residential scene, embodying the city's dedication to sustainability, accessibility, and social equity. As a model modern suburb, it will prioritise sustainable practices, cater to cyclists, pedestrians, and public transport users, and offer ample affordable housing options alongside a diverse array of residential choices.
