Traffic Fines Increase 10% Across the Country
Despite the advice of the Public Prosecutor’s office and the Council of State, the government has decided to go through with this decision.
Using your phone while driving will now cost you €420. Skipping a red light is a fine of €300, while not wearing your seatbelt will cost you €180. You can also expect a €9 administrative cost no matter which fine you get.
Justice Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz has announced that as of March 1st, 2024, all minor traffic violation fines will increase by 10%, with 5.7% covering inflation and the remaining 4.3% going to the Ministry of justice and security's budget.
Some Objections
The Public Prosecutor's Office argued for a 30% reduction, reasoning that the fines for minor infractions are increasing to the price point of major infractions. The fine rates in administrative law and criminal law should more closely relate to each other, and more accurately reflect the severity of the crime.
The Council of State advised the government to refrain from the 10% increase proposed in November 2023. These fines are intended to increase road safety and not to reduce budget deficits within government departments.
Nevertheless a spokesperson for the Ministry of justice and Security reported that this increase was in an effort to prevent cuts elsewhere in their budget.
