4 May 2025 – Remembrance Day in Groningen
On Sunday, 4 May 2025, Groningen joins the national Remembrance Day (Dodenherdenking), honoring all civilians and military personnel who died in wars and peacekeeping missions since World War II. The day includes a series of commemorative events at local cemeteries and monuments throughout the city, starting at 9:15 in the morning and culminating in a public ceremony at the Martinikerkhof in the evening. A silent march will begin at 18:35, followed by the traditional two minutes of silence at 20:00, accompanied by speeches and musical performances. All are welcome to attend and participate in this respectful day of reflection.
5 May – Leutje Festival & Free Market at Bernoulliplein
Celebrate Liberation Day with the return of the Leutje Festival at Bernoulliplein in Groningen. Alongside music and festivities, the event features a lively free market (vrijmarkt), where locals can sell second-hand items and forgotten treasures. 5 May – Bevrijdingsfestival Groningen
The Bevrijdingsfestival Groningen returns on Monday, 5 May 2025, celebrating 80 years of freedom at the Drafbaan in Stadspark. From 12:00 to 23:45, enjoy a packed program with live music, dance, spoken word, and activities for all ages. Artists on the main stage include Maan, Goldkimono, Skegss, Pé & Rinus, Zoë Tauran, and Typhoon. Alongside music, expect performances, workshops, and discussions around the theme of freedom.
8–18 May – Meikermis
Groningen’s city centre fills with lights, rides and festive sounds as Meikermis returns from 8 to 18 May. With over 50 attractions across the Grote Markt, Vismarkt and Ossenmarkt, it’s one of the largest fairs in the region. Expect thrilling rides, family fun, snacks, and plenty of classic carnival atmosphere throughout these ten days.
17–18 May – Schapenscheerdersfestival & Wolfeest
The annual Sheep Shearing Festival and Wool Fair returns to Balloo for one final edition as the Herders van Balloo wrap up their work. Visitors can watch sheep being sheared, browse over 70 stalls filled with handmade and wool-related items, and join in creative workshops. With food, music, and fun activities for kids, it’s a relaxed countryside event that makes for an ideal spring day out.
17 May – The Dragon Dances Again!
After a long restoration period, the Chinese Garden at Hortus Botanicus Haren reopens on 17 May with a vibrant celebration titled The Dragon Dances Again!. Expect dragon and lion dances, Chinese music, martial arts demos, painting workshops, and more. Activities are spread across the garden, with special areas for kids, food trucks, and cultural performances. 17 May – Swapfiets 'm d’r in
On May 17th, ACLO Groningen brings a Dutch classic to DOT Groningen with Swapfiets 'm d’r in — a hilarious biking challenge inspired by “Ter Land, Ter Zee en In de Lucht.” Participants attempt to cycle across a narrow track above water, with prizes for speed, originality, and sheer misfortune. Expect plenty of crashes, laughter, and music at the City Beach. Whether you join the race or just watch with a drink in hand, it promises a fun afternoon.
18 May – The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride Groningen
On Sunday, 18 May 2025, Groningen joins over 100 countries worldwide for The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride—a global charity motorcycle event that raises funds and awareness for men’s health. The local edition kicks off at 12:15 PM from Triumph Groningen (Oeverkruid 6) and welcomes riders dressed in their dapper best. 23 May – Wijnwandeling Haren
On Friday, 23 May 2025, the centre of Haren will host the Wijnwandeling again—an evening stroll filled with wine tastings and charming shops. 24 May – Wolter Wolthers Disco Festival

25 May – Halve Marathon Groningen
On Sunday, 25 May 2025, Groningen hosts the very first edition of the Halve Marathon Groningen, starting and finishing on the dynamic Zernike Campus. The event features multiple distances, including 21K, 10K, 5K, a Family Run, and a Kids Run, making it open to runners of all ages and levels. This one-lap route leads participants through the city and surrounding countryside, celebrating movement, innovation, and community. All proceeds support the Vrienden Beatrix Kinderziekenhuis.
25 May – Markt! at Stadspark
