Wilders Meets with Far-Right Leaders to Forge European Alliance
Overview of the Wednesday meeting in Brussels as Wilders and far-right leaders aim to form a powerful coalition in the European Parliament amid political shifts and new Dutch Cabinet formation
This past Wednesday, PVV leader Geert Wilders met with other far-right European leaders in Brussels to discuss forming a powerful alliance in the European Parliament. Wilders' discussions included key figures like Marine Le Pen of the French Rassemblement National, Matteo Salvini of the Italian League, and Tom Van Grieken of Vlaams Belang. Their goal is to turn recent election wins into significant political influence by forming a large "super faction" to unite right-wing forces against the left. They hope to include parties like Chega from Portugal and possibly bring back the German AfD, which was previously expelled for being too extreme.
Political Groups Meet in Brussels
As the new European Parliament session approaches, national delegations and political groups are working to set up the new Parliament. Fifty-two newly elected MEPs who are not yet part of any group need to be placed, and potential matches with existing parties are being evaluated. These changes could greatly impact key positions in European institutions. Despite efforts to form a larger coalition, cooperation with centre-right parties, such as the EPP and the right-wing liberal Renew faction, seems unlikely due to their reluctance to align with far-right groups.
New Dutch Cabinet Taking Shape
The Schoof I Cabinet is forming, with several key ministerial and state secretary positions being filled. Mona Keijzer is set to become the Housing Minister and Deputy Prime Minister for the BBB, and Eppo Bruins will be the Minister of Education, Culture, and Science for the NSC. Dirk Beljaarts, former director of Royal Horeca Netherlands, is expected to be the new Minister of Economic Affairs for the PVV. Tax economist Folkert Idsinga will be the State Secretary of Taxation under Finance Minister Eelco Heinen, with other positions still being finalised.
Dirk Beljaarts as Minister of Economic Affairs
Dirk Beljaarts is on track to become the new Minister of Economic Affairs, representing the PVV. He has held various advisory and honorary positions and is known for his connections within political circles. In a farewell interview with De Ondernemer, Beljaarts hinted at his new role but did not confirm details. Beljaarts has been recognised for his leadership during his time at Royal Horeca Netherlands and is expected to bring his experience to the economic ministry.
Future Cooperation and Challenges
Wilders and other far-right leaders aim to strengthen their position in the European Parliament but face challenges in gaining broader support. The potential reintegration of the AfD, despite its controversial history, and the reluctance of other political groups to work with the far-right, adds complexity to their plans. The coming weeks will be crucial as political groups finalise their strategies and alliances for the new Parliament session.
