‘With the Greatest Possible Force’: What the King’s Speech Means for Groningen
Faster progress on Groningen quake repairs, fair payouts for benefits parents, and correct WIA payments: the King urges visible results for households despite a fragile cabinet.

The King said the big recovery programmes that have dragged on for too long must now move “with the greatest possible force.” He named three groups in particular: people in Groningen affected by gas-quake damage, parents harmed by the childcare benefits scandal, and people who received a too-low WIA disability payment.
Groningen Recovery
Years of gas extraction caused earthquakes that damaged homes in the province of Groningen. Two bodies are central here. The National Coordinator Groningen (NCG) checks whether a house must be strengthened (made structurally safer) and manages those projects. The Mining Damage Institute (IMG) handles damage claims and pays compensation. Most addresses have now been assessed, and a large share meets the safety norm, but many households are still waiting for actual strengthening work. Billions have already been paid out for damage, with more planned. If you are waiting, keep your case active with NCG or IMG, respond quickly to letters and appointments, and use local support services if you get stuck.
Childcare Benefits Scandal
In the childcare benefits affair, many parents were wrongly labelled as fraudsters and had to repay large sums, leading to debt and hardship. A “full assessment” is a detailed review of a family’s situation to decide how much compensation is due, on top of the initial fast payment many parents received. Most parents have now completed a full assessment or chosen to stop the process, and tens of thousands have been recognised as victims and compensated. Some additional damage items, such as health, work or housing consequences, take longer to resolve. If you are involved, keep your contact details up to date, upload the requested documents on time, and stay in touch with your case manager so your file keeps moving.
WIA Underpayments
WIA is the Dutch benefit for people who are long-term ill or disabled. In some years, the “day-wage” used to calculate WIA was set incorrectly. That means some people were underpaid and others overpaid. The fix is straightforward: anyone underpaid will get a top-up and back payments; anyone overpaid will not be asked to pay money back. The benefits agency (UWV) is correcting cases one by one, which means the clean-up will take time. If you receive a letter from UWV, read it carefully and check whether your monthly amount changes. If you have questions, contact UWV promptly so your case doesn’t pause.
Why this matters now
The King stressed that people need visible results at home, not just promises: a safe and repaired house in Groningen, fair compensation for parents, and correct benefit amounts for WIA recipients. The cabinet also has a narrow base in Parliament, which makes steady delivery on daily concerns: income, housing, safety and healthcare, even more important. The success of these recovery efforts will be measured by what residents actually experience in their homes, bank accounts and day-to-day sense of safety.
