Do You Feel Safe Going Out at Night? 6 Out of 10 People Say No
Survey reveals two-thirds of Groningen residents feel unsafe at night, highlighting the need for better security measures and diverse nightlife options.
A recent survey conducted by the Municipality of Groningen reveals that nearly two-thirds of the city's nightlife attendees sometimes feel unsafe, with younger individuals, particularly those aged 18 to 25, experiencing the most vulnerability. The study, which engaged almost 4,600 participants via the Groningen Gehoord residents' panel, highlights key safety concerns and preferences for nightlife improvements.
The findings indicate that 63% of respondents occasionally feel unsafe in nightlife areas, with 13% avoiding nightlife altogether due to discomfort. Among young adults aged 18 to 25, the figure rises to 80%, with 26% frequently or very often feeling insecure.
For individuals aged 26 to 34, 73% report occasional feelings of insecurity, with 22% experiencing it more regularly. These numbers decline significantly among older groups, with 65% of those aged 35 to 49 reporting occasional unease, and fewer instances of frequent insecurity in higher age brackets.
Key Concerns: Streets More Unsafe Than Venues
The primary area of concern is the streets surrounding nightlife venues, where 87% of respondents cite feeling unsafe. In contrast, only 11% report insecurity inside pubs, clubs, and dance venues. Aggressive behaviour tops the list of reasons for these feelings, followed by excessive alcohol and drug use. Additionally, 25% of respondents believe there is insufficient police and security presence.
Safety Improvement Suggestions
Respondents shared several recommendations to improve safety:
Increased police and security presence
Enhanced street lighting
Designated 'safe spaces' in nightlife zones
Educational programs to promote respect and responsible behaviour among youth
Satisfaction and Preferences
Despite safety concerns, Groningen's nightlife received high satisfaction ratings, particularly among young adults. Three out of four participants aged 18 to 25 expressed satisfaction, though this decreased slightly among older groups. Younger attendees frequent pubs and nightclubs most often, while older groups prefer festivals, dance cafés, and music venues.
One common suggestion across all age groups was to expand the availability of live music in nightlife venues. Residents also called for more diverse options to cater to various age groups, such as dance spaces for those aged 30 and above and LGBTQ+-friendly venues.
The survey sheds light on the need to balance Groningen's nightlife with measures to enhance safety. While a significant portion of residents appreciates the city's offerings, addressing concerns about street safety and expanding venue diversity will be critical in maintaining and improving the nightlife experience for all age groups.
